Tippecanoe County Parks & Recreation Partners with Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant

My name is Mary Cutler, and I’m the naturalist
for the Tippecanoe County Parks and Recreation Department, and in that capacity, I provide
environmental education to people of all ages in our community. We’re so fortunate over the years to have
partnered with Sea Grant, and specifically with Jay Beugly, to extend some of the environmental
outreach that connects to tributaries, larger waterways, and the fishery populations in
our community. Through the expertise of Jay and some of his
other colleagues, they’ve brought information about how the river health is reflected in
the populations of the macroinvertebrates and fishes that we find in the small tributaries
and the larger waterways. And so, through lots of hands-on and participatory
experiences and through actual connections with fish brought to those audiences of students
of all ages, folks have purely come away with a different notion of what the health of our
local waterways are. Much more healthy than they ever envisioned,
and for many of them, that is a revelation. They had no idea that our waterways were as
healthy as they are, and it’s begun to sort of change the view they have of these very
precious and special natural resources.
