Temple recreational therapy website provides open-access to research

RT Wise Owls is an open-access
database as well as a resource center for evidence-based
practice related to recreational therapy. It’s a site where people can find
research articles related to recreational therapy as well as a
variety of links that would assist them with implementing evidence-based
practice. I’m Heather Porter I’m an associate
professor at Temple University in the Recreational Therapy program and I
created and continued to manage the RT Wise Owls website. So we started the site in 2013 that’s when we had our first Recreational Therapy Evidence-Based
Practice Day Conference. At that conference students were presenting
their research and we didn’t want it to just sit idly on a professor’s desk or
inside a student’s computer we wanted to share that with other therapists to be
able to think about considering utilizing or implementing that research
in their everyday practice. So we put it up on the website and it garnered a lot
of attention, there is a high demand for more research to be easily accessible
for people to find and then implement. So as those years have progressed we’ve
continued to add more and more to the site at this time we have about 40,000
views every year that number continues to grow it’s used by 70 plus countries
it’s also used by a variety of other recreational therapy educational
programs as well as being listed as a database by the National Institutes of
Health. The lab accepts undergraduate and graduate students. The students volunteer
their time, they work three to five hours on average a week and they search for
literature related to a topic that interests them. So not only does that
help us find literature but it’s also helping them to develop their research
skills because they’re learning how do you search their database how do I find
what I’m looking for how do I analyze an article and then once they found an
article they’re going to review it and they’re going to look at the content of
that article the students are then also gaining knowledge about interventions
which can then ultimately enhance their skill set and practice as a therapist. To the best of our knowledge this is the only database that is solely devoted to
recreational therapy literature and it is just such an exciting opportunity to
be a part of our students are being involved in finding and curating
research that is informing patient care as well as trends and interventions in
our field and it’s a time in our program that we’re really proud of.
