Stern Grove Festival Kids Days

Stern Grove Festival Kids Days

This year we took our kids camps program
and expanded them. We partnered up with Boys and Girls Club in the Excelsior
district here in San Francisco as well as Hamilton Recreation Center. And I know for some of the children it was a way to get them in touch with some talents that
they didn’t realize that they had. We had one little girl who was at Boys and
Girls Club in the Excelsior who had never touched a conga before and it
turned out she had a really great talent for the conga. Music, for a lot of people, and a lot of people in this community, is something that someone else does and they enjoy. It leaves something out, which is the creation of music, which is something that everybody should enjoy and connects people spiritually to each
other and to something greater. Programs like this are extremely important. I mean I think what
they do is they offer these kids an outlet something that they may not be as
familiar with that gives them a chance to express themselves. Even for those who don’t aspire to be musicians professionally when they get older I think that it helps to foster a spirit of community it helps to foster a
spirit of a history and appreciation for those that have come before us and helps to foster an appreciation of the different cultures. We also had our Kids Day program. The
Kids Day program has been running for many years now. It’s become a very
popular program here in San Francisco to experience and learn about music and
dance from other cultures. My name is Vicki and I am co-founder of Dolrhythms Dance Company and we’ve been a part of Stern Grove Festival Kids Days for probably the last 10 years. Well kids, they’re just so open to it. They
have no preconceived ideas or notions about what dance is supposed to be or
where it comes from and to be able to teach something new to someone
that has never heard of it, I think they’re just more accessible to it and they have so much more fun with it. I think it’s so important to teach kids
about other cultures and so to have a place like Stern Grove Festival that brings in so many different kinds of artists and so many different dance
forms are taught here, it’s so amazing. Every single time we do it we meet so
many different kids and so many of them have never heard of this dance form or
know where it’s from. So you’re teaching something completely new to kids that
don’t have access to it all the time. I think that’s amazing.
