Can you smell that in the air? the birds are chirping the flowers are blooming the trees are green again it can only mean one thing time to sign up for summer camps create great summer memories with Charles County Recreation, Parks and Tourism with over 20 different offerings to choose from you’re bound to find a camp that is just right for your child sign up today for unforgettable summer fun hi I’m Austin flowers and welcome to the recreation parks and tourism report we’ve got a lot of great programs in store for this summer’s camp season new this year we have swim the bases campers ages 8 to 13 will participate in group activities at the blue crab stadium then take a walk over to the Donald M. Wade aquatic center for an afternoon of swimming want to try out one of our specialty camps check out our superheroes and villains workshop created for vigilantes ages five to twelve this camp keeps our little heroes is fun and active with super activities such as arts crafts sports drama and of course Lego or if your young one is in football sign up for the Rod Milstead youth football camp join La Plata high school head football coach and former Washington Redskin Rod Milstead and they provide instructional drills and activities designed to develop muscle memory speed and quickness on the field no pads or helmets are required you know I’m not too bad when it comes to throwing the old pigskin around used to be pretty good back in my day but you guys don’t believe me check out this spiral uh, I don’t know often that spiral looked a little wobbly to me well if it isn’t a park manager and Gilbert run Casey Jones great catch Casey you know I got skills Austin but i’m not really out here to catch footballs i’m here to catch fish I’ve been testing the waters for upcoming fishing buddies derby is that were adult and youth fishing teams compete with each other yes often they catch bluegill crappie and bass you can even receive a special award for hooking at trout or a catfish well I couldn’t think of a better location than Gilbert run for an event like that one of the nice things about Gilbert run its a wide selection of pavilions you can find pavilions throughout all of our county parks it’s always a nice spot to have a party grill some burgers and hotdogs or even just catch some shade alright Austin i’m going to get back to these fish enjoy the rest of your report thanks a lot Casey you know the best part about warmer weather has got to be opening the pools joining us from Lackey high school’s indoor pool is our own aquatics program supervisor Heather Couchman howdy Austin how are you doing great Heather what’s going on this year in the wide world of water well this is going to be a great year for Aquatics we’re so excited to tell you about our new and improved learning some program for infants and adults and our mini swim lessons we want to bridge the gap with new opportunity for summers between our minnows and our dolphin group whoa wait I’m sorry i don’t do much on the aquatic side did you say there’s dolphins in the pool no Austin and Dolphins are what we call swimmers who have transitioned from our swim lesson program into our swim club program okay I got you so we have our merbabies aged 6 – 36 months guppies age three to five, minows 6 to 12 then the dolphins and finally our expert level summers called sharks we’re also trying to put a larger emphasis on core survival skills in our beginners like the guppies and minnows? that’s right you’re a quick learner Austin Hey Heather, don’t we also have water safety month coming up right again we’ll be celebrating National Water Safety Month is upcoming may I right Austin I gotta go well I guess when you gotta swim gotta swim so let’s get out of the pool and talk about the Potomac River did you know Charles County own mallows bay is home to a historic sunken world war one fleet mark your calendars for April 21st through 23rd for the next installment in the Discover Quest series with a world war one commemoration weekend this weekend will be jam packed with activities at the College of Southern Maryland Mallows Bay park and other various destinations offering exciting World War one exhibits and programs well that wraps up this edition of the recreation parks and tourism report i’m Austin flowers and remember fun happens here
