Recreation & Leisure Services — Careers, Program Development and Management, Elysia

[♪♪♪] My name is Elysia Townsend. And this is my office! With the population
that we serve, I love being able
to come into work and make a difference. I’m excited every
morning that I get up, and my days look different
almost every day. I love being able
to have the chance to make a difference
in someone’s life and to just have
that one memory or just
have them smile. NARRATOR: Elysia always knew
she wanted to work with people and improve the lives
of those around her, but working with children
wasn’t always her plan. Through the Recreation and
Leisure Services program she found diversity in
her field placements that broadened
her perspective, introduced new
experiences to her and ultimately inspired
her to find her passion. When I was in
high school I had worked at
a nursing home, and I had been doing programs
on weekends and evenings and it was always something
that I had liked. So when I was
in university I was actually going through
to be a social worker to help them out
when I was there, but it’s just not
the pathway I wanted, so I kind of figured
out what was it that I was doing
that I liked? And that was
the programming. NARRATOR: Designing and
implementing programs that enrich peoples’ lives and enhance communities
is a central theme of the Recreation and
Leisure Services program. Through creative
learning experiences intentionally
designed to build on students’ strengths
and interests, the faculty at
Conestoga guided Elysia and her attraction
to programming into a rewarding career that benefits children,
families and communities. ELYSIA:
The program was very broad and you can kind of
gear it towards what your
interests were and what you wanted to
get out of the program, so there was a lot of
self-learning and self-guiding. I just think that it’s
such a unique opportunity that a lot of other
schools don’t have. To get a chance
to do those things and do the hands-on
really helped me to decide what
I wanted to do. This is my school! NARRATOR: What you do here
counts out there.
