Recreation & Fitness Career Training

>>>Tracie Bowers The Recreation Management Program is a
two year associate degree program and then we also have it’s a Fitness Health Specialist
certificate and that’s a one year program and we have people that combine both
of them, but ultimately we have people that come under the program and work in parks, recreation, fitness, health, outdoors, aquatics, golf. The industry is really vast which is
nice because there’s just so many job opportunities and it
really helps with employability as well.>>>Burke I’m interning for Dane County Parks and I manage the Lake Farm Unit. Main activities are overseeing the park
and its maintenance, dealing with any developments our issues that visitors have. There’s
also a campground so that keeps me pretty busy, especially at night. Well, without Madison College and the
background that they’ve given me this past year I wouldn’t have been able to get this
internship. Many of the instructors there are park directors themselves or
managers, and so they have the practical experience. I went to UW Madison, that was great. This is an entirely different atmosphere. It’s a lot more hands-on you learn what you need to learn. You
don’t read a text book for hours on end and not remember any of it. Everything that
the teach you here is practical to the field you’re going into and you will use
it. it is one of the best experiences I’ve
had this past year and hands down I would recommend it to
anybody. >>>Kyle Kraft I am a partnering owner of Crossfit Farmland here in Waunakee
Wisconsin. I went through the Rec Management program and finished in 2008. I was just looking to get into
something with outdoor education, and I found their
program online, and it seems that it would cover all the basics that I was
looking for. I was very surprised that it was actually
taught by instructors with small classes and I felt very taken
care of. It was more what I was used to as far as
experiential education versus just textbook learning and it allowed me to really broaden my persona as far as being out in the real world and engaging with other professionals and
sort of creating that mindset for myself while being a professional.>>>Reese MacAskill I am the Recreation Supervisor for the Cottage Grove Park and Recreation Department. I run and organize all of our youth leagues, our camps, anything like that and I make
sure they have all the equipment, I do the scheduling, kind of all those
little things that, you know, are behind the scenes that take to run all the programs. The nice thing in the biggest thing I
loved about Madison College was that their instructors were actually
professionals in the field. So they bring a real-life situations from their jobs in their communities into the classroom
and allow you to work on it and I felt so prepared, because a lot of
the things that now I’m dealing with I was able to see in the classroom. It’s really great I would say to come
here.>>>Tracie Bowers We offer so many opportunities we are involved in our industry and we
care that students get employed. I want all my students employed while they’re here or after. It’s great that they have the education
and they walk out the door with their degree, but ultimately the employment is key for
us. and we have great relationships in our
district within our industry. People contact me every day looking for
students, interns, graduates, volunteers.
