Parks and Rec’s Wildest Fan Theories Crossover Our Favorite Shows! (Nerdist News w/ Jessica Chobot)

– Happy Birthday, Parks & Rec. We’re breakin’ down how
Parks & Recreation’s wildest fan theories tie into
all of our favorite shows. Break out the child size sodas because it’s the 10 year anniversary of Parks & Rec hitting
our television screens for the the first time, and in celebration of all things Pawnee, we’re sifting through the internet to break down our favorite theories about Leslie Knope and the gang. Now, while there is
plenty of wild speculation for a show that’s been off
the air for four years, was Jerry Gergich a sleeper agent? Hopefully, how was Leslie able
to pay for all of her trips and gifts on a government
employee’s salary? She was originally from Eagleton, duh, and what really happened
to Mark Brendanawicz? Just kidding, no one cares. What really caught our eye
is the mounting evidence that Parks & Rec seems to take place in the same universe as a
bunch of other TV shows, so for our theory, we are folding in several other fan theories into an intricate and
carefully layered hypothesis that will blow your collective minds and in no way could be dismantled by something as simple as logic. Hah, just kidding. Seriously, though, some
of this is pretty thin, but we think it’s fun anyway, so let’s run down how Parks
& Rec shares its universe with four different TV
shows, Friends, The Office, The Good Place, and Stranger Things. First up, The Good Place. It’s no secret it takes place in the same world as Parks & Rec, besides the fact that both shows
were created by Mike Shore, there are plenty of
references that connect them. In fact, we covered some of
them on Nerdist News Edition, like how Champagne by Jean-Ralphio appears on the back of
a mag in The Good Place, but most notably is Ron Swanson’s
existence in both worlds, and his company, called Swanson Safes was responsible for suffocating Jason, and we know this for sure
thanks to a radio commercial recorded by Ron Swanson
actor, Nick Offerman, that played on the official
Good Place podcast. – [Nick] Swanson Safe Company. We make safes, you know, for things. – Following the thread of
the Mike Shore connection, Parks & Rec was originally going to tie into another
workplace mockumentary comedy that he had a hand in, The Office. Originally, the two series were supposed to cross over at some point
with the broken photocopier being the link, but this
subplot was dropped, plus, the simple fact of
explaining how Rashida Jones appears in both series
as different characters, Karen Filippelli in The Office, and Ann Perkins in Parks & Rec would have been difficult. However, some creative
fan theorists on Reddit came up with a solution to this. What if Karen Filippelli and Ann Perkins are actually the same character? The theory states that Karen Filippelli testified in the famous
Scranton Strangler trial, and was put into the
witness protection program, where she then relocated
to Pawnee, Indiana, and became Ann Perkins, and
as far as conspiracies go, that’s a pretty solid theory
to connect these two sitcoms, and what about the third show in the Michael Shore-niverse,
Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Well, there hasn’t been
anything concrete yet connecting Parks & Rec with
the team over at the Nine-Nine, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine has crossed over with other shows before, namely New Girl, when they were both still on Fox. Now that Brooklyn Nine-Nine
has made the move to NBC, a crossover with Parks & Rec
is more of a possibility, and speaking of hit NBC series,
we have yet another TV show that possibly connects to Parks & Rec, caught by the eagle-eyed
fans over on Reddit, Friends. The theory sites a scene
in the classic 90s comedy where Monica mentioned the guys Rachel has broken her first date rule with. – Matt Wyer, Mark Linn, Ben Wyatt–
– Any more? (audience laughing) – Yup, you heard that right, Ben Wyatt. A little math and sleuthing shows that Ben Wyatt would have
been around the same age as Rachel and the titular Friends, so he definitely could have
popped up in their social circle if he spent any time in New York City. And finally, Stranger Things. Its connection to Parks
& Recreation was sparked by the strong resemblance between actors Ben Schwartz and Joe Keery, and further solidified by the fact that both shows take place in Indiana. Made famous by the folks over at UPROXX, the prevailing theory
is that Steve Harrington is Jean-Ralphio’s dad,
and that Pawnee, Indiana is the sunnier side up of The Upside Down. For those of you thinking,
what about Dr. Saperstein, isn’t he Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa’s dad? Well, keep in mind, folks,
while Dr. Saperstein might’ve been their father,
he ain’t their daddy, according to UPROXX, Steve
and Nancy had twin babies, but Steve loses his mind, or is killed by one of the weirder
creatures from The Upside Down. Dr. Saperstein swoops in and
raises the kids like a hero and spoils them, which
is why they ended up the way that they did. ♪ The one ♪ – So there ya have it,
all the fan theories that stitched together Parks & Rec into the greater TV universe, and maybe after all of these connections, Parks & Rec really just takes
place in our own universe, because they totally
predicted the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series in 2016, or we are all fake and
part of the TV universe, which wouldn’t surprise me,
but what do you folks think? What other shows might be part
of the Parks & Rec universe? Who is your favorite
Parks & Rec character? Ron, Leslie, Perd
Hapley, Little Sebastian, Orin, Tammy, Tammy 2, Jeremy Jamm? – You just got jammed. – Seriously, there are so many great characters, let’s discuss. Thanks for watching, be
sure to like, subscribe, and mash that little bell
to get notified every time we go live with a show
or drop a new video, and if you liked this
episode of Nerdist News, check out our coverage
of the theory behind the real Scranton Strangler, that’s right, it was Toby all along. (lively digital music)
