Missouri Record Fish Stories – Brown Trout (2019 Update)

NARRATOR: Now this fish story is something
real special. They’ll be no trophy hanging on the wall
this time. Oh no. This is the story of Frank! Phil Lilley: Frank showed up under our dock. We have a lot of big trout come under the
dock and eat, and my dock hand named him, “Frank”. His back was very humped. And his dorsal fin laid over to the right. So he was very distinctive. It was Frank when he showed up. Even though we had pictures and video, we
didn’t really publicize him that much. We didn’t feel like it was safe. NARRATOR: Meet Paul Crews. Though friends with Phil Lilley for over forty
years, as he set out to fish a tournament on a windy February day in 2019, he had no
idea of the existence of Frank. Paul Crews: We caught a couple of little rainbows
and had another bite that felt like that and set the hook. And you know, probably about 30 or 60 seconds
into the fight the fish really lit it up! He took off and he was, just tearing me limb
from limb. I couldn’t do anything. He was in control. He was the boss. And honestly, when he came out of the water,
to me it was like the fish doubled in size. It went from 8 to 10 pounds, we laid it on
the floor and I thought, Oh, this is probably a twenty pound brown trout. Let’s quit, let’s go weigh in. Phil Lilley: Well whenever I got the call
that Paul was bringing in a large brown, I lifted the live well and it was solid fish. And I immediately said, “It’s Frank”. Andy Austin: Well whenever we get a call about
a potential state record, we are excited for the angler; we’re excited for our program
to bring great fishing to Missouri. It was particularly exciting because the fish
was still alive! And this is the only state record that I know
of that was released back into the water. NARRATOR: The final tally, 34 pounds and 10
ounces; beating the existing Missouri state record by nearly six pounds. But the real reward: watching him swim away. Phil Lilley: Well it is an amazing story. I mean if you really think about all of the
aspects of the fish. Being documented, and the being caught; brought
back to the same dock. Caught by my best friend. NARRATOR: And remember now, when you are dipping
a line into the cool waters of Taneycomo, fish are out there. Big fish. And one of them is named Frank.
