Michigan recreational marijuana ballot decision expected

6:32 right now and we’re talking about this controversial proposal to legalize recreational marijuana and today we are expecting to learn whether that proposal is going to be on the November ballot for Michigan voters to consider but as Nick Monacelli explains it all depends on what happens in Lansing good morning utopia Gardens on the east side of Detroit is one of hundreds of medicinal marijuana shops in the city they’ve got their fights and coming up in June they’ve got a whole licensing issue that’s an entirely separate story from the one going on today today the State Board of Canvassers is going to decide if the issue for recreational marijuana should go on the November ballot and if that happens if photos approve it’s a bunch of these shops will be changing their business plan today the State Board of Canvassers will meet deciding whether or not these signatures gathered to put recreational marijuana on the November ballot are valid the Bureau of Election says there are enough signatures so now a stamp of approval is neither from that Board of Canvassers which is expected to happen unless the legislature votes on it or makes a competing ballot proposal analyst suggests that if recreational marijuana is allowed sales could exceed nearly 1 billion dollars a year in our state the proposal calls for legalizing possession and sale of up to two and a half ounces for recreational use and it would be taxed at 10% plus these six percent sales tax revenue splits are supposed to be 35 percent going to education 35 to roads and the other 30 going to cities and counties where marijuana businesses are that proposal also allows cities to decide whether they will allow the marijuana businesses as you’re likely aware there are heated opinions on both sides of this argument city of Detroit we can tax it we can use the money for the educational system like they do in Colorado now I just think it’d be a great benefit if we did each his own you know as long as it doesn’t affect me you know but then when it does affect you know myself you know the people under the influence driving stuff like that I think it’s probably a bad idea that State Board of Canvassers meets this morning and Lansing at 10 o’clock on the east side Nick Monacelli local 4 news today
