Manchester & the Mountains in the Shires of Vermont: Outdoor Activities and Culture

Known as The Green Mountain State, Vermont
is a perfect, four-season destination with incredible skiing in the winter months and
an abundance of things to do the rest of the year. But, Southern Vermont in particular
has its own unique vibe, with classic New England villages that are full of galleries,
restaurants, family-friendly attractions and wonderful places to stay.
Hi, my name’s Jody, and this is my first time visiting Manchester and the Mountains
in The Shires of Vermont. So join me as we explore a few of the exciting places to visit
and fun things to do. Sitting at the foot of Mount Equinox, Manchester
is a popular retreat for anyone who wants to breathe in the cool, clean air and relax
in the picturesque setting. Whilst here, a visit to Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home,
is a must for people of all ages. The estate was the home of Robert Lincoln, the son of
Abraham Lincoln. You can tour the home and hear what life was like more than a century
ago for the wealthy city folk who spent their summers here. The goats on Hildene Farm are
favorites with families. You can see them being milked and cheese being made. There
is also a restored 1903 Pullman railcar and about 12 miles of walking trails, including
the Maple Trail that takes you to the dene and a 600-foot floating wetlands boardwalk.
This area has such an inspiring and welcoming feel that I could stay here for months and
completely decompress; all I need is some reading material.
Which takes us to our next stop – the Northshire Bookstore. Called the “best bookstore in
New England”, this family owned staple has the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff
around. If you like to read, plan a couple of hours here!
Next, have a stroll down historic Main Street to Epoch 18, a cooperative arts and crafts
gallery of 18 artisans from across the region. Every day a different artisan runs the gallery
and offers information about their creative process; it’s quite fascinating.
For a complete change of pace, your next stop should be Bromley Mountain, Vermont’s Summer
Adventure, in Peru, where you can zip line, ride the giant swing, bungee trampoline, space
bike, or cruise down the Alpine slide, which spans almost two-thirds of a mile!
Southern Vermont has been a lovely combination of charm, history, adventure and scenery,
and with the Burlington International Airport, it’s also easy to get to – so get online
and book a trip today!
