LNBA – Meaning

[Music] [Show Theme Music]>>If we saw another NBA uh… member walking around campus or if we went shopping and we saw that person in a store, it would just be a huge smile on both our faces. And sometimes my wife would say: “Well, you know that was a weird smile that you had on your face” and I wouldn’t even be aware of it. And it was because I was seeing a person that immediately, immediately reminded me of just a fun time. [Music]>>I feel really fortunate to have had an opportunity to get a part of the crowd. ‘Cause you can always go find pick up games anywhere I suppose. You can go to the parks, you can go anywhere. But, uh… to have a group of people who tend to be regulars and you build up a certain rapport with people and it shows up on the court. It actually shows up off the court when you get to meet them in your everyday lives. Those types of relationships are things you invest in over time. I enjoyed it and I feel really fortunate to have actually been part of that for so many years.>>I’ve tried other things, you know, jogging and uh.. swimming and so forth but nothing compares to basketball, uhhh.. for me.>>I would say that the guys I play basketball with are, are some of my best friends on campus. Every once in a while we would get a group together to get lunch or something but it’s pretty much really confined to the basketball court. Um… But you know but it’s several hours a week that.. that we play together and it’s very much, you know, whether a guy is on your team this week, he’s going to be on your team next week. So every one there is really friendly with each other and um… I think we all have for the most part a lot of respect for each other as players. [Music]>>I think I’d like to see [Music] everybody on the court… [Laughs] one more time and just uh…. pretend that we’re playing. Uh, because I think it can, it can bring back some of that magic that was there.>>For me I get to interact with professors and people that I would have no, you know, no other outlet to interact with. Umm.. So I mean I like it, I like that and it is nice to to just relax and… and have a, you know, play basketball. All of us have kind of a passion for playing. So it’s nice to — to interact that way and… and.. and… kind of go about playing the game and talking and getting to know each other.>>You normally see folks in your part of Tech but this was a regular occasion where I met people from other parts of Tech and got know people in other branches of engineering, got to know people in the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Ivan Allen College, Administration, Facilities. And, uh… It was just a very…. sort of made you feel part of larger picture, I guess. It wasn’t uh… I never quite thought about it before but it’s not like I come to work I go to my department I go back. It just felt like you were a part of the university.>>It could very well be that glue that that attracts people to, uh… to remain in the place and uh… it may very well be that the fact we could play basketball at noon time was such a big perk in the job that I know for a fact, talking to some of the guys, they wouldn’t leave Georgia Tech because of that. They would know that they would be able to make twice as much money some place else. But it was, you know, something as simple or seemingly simple as having that luxury of just walking over to the Athletic Center, seeing the same old faces and just having fun for an hour or a day. That was big enough to be an element in the decision making about a career. [Music]>>There are so many things I would miss about Tech. It’s a place that I really love but… but really high on that list would be the NBA. Because it’s, umm… I mean it’s a group of guys that I really like, I would miss all of them, and I would really miss the basketball. I mean like I said, I’ve I’ve played basketball for, you know, 20 plus years and I don’t know that I have ever found a game that I like as much as this game. That the quality of the basketball and the quality of the people involved are — are so high. And I really doubt that I will be able to find that again. And so, umm… I feel like I would have to find someway to keep playing even if I wasn’t at Tech. I don’t know how but you know… Whether I have to sneak into the CRC or something I don’t think I would want to give that up and I mean I hope that I can be like some of those players that keep going into their 70s. Because, you know… now that I am playing, I really see why they stick around.>>The whole thing is a wonderful sweet set of memories that I have and in fact I think it’s one of the highlights of all the years that I spent at Georgia Tech. Up there with uh… working with students and uh… doing fun research with colleagues, uh… The little NBA was.. was one of the highlights as well.>>Everyone hits a point where they can’t play any more I mean that’s just the nature of, of aging and unless I was not able to even jog at a slow speed I would find a way to be out there. I mean, even if a doctor told me I was going to be inflicting further damage on myself umm, I would keep playing just … I don’t know. When you really have a passion for something, you find a way to, to make it work and you know, my hope is that if I can stay in decent shape and you know, try to take care of myself that I would be able to be out there on the court for another few decades.>>It seems to have created a glue for many of us who were part of these group of silly guys that showed up to play basketball. I’m reminded of a quote that “You don’t know that you are having the time of your life until just after you’ve had the time of your life” After it’s passed… I didn’t realize how much fun and how magical that was until it no longer was there for me. [Music]
