Levi’s & Google design first smart jacket – Jacquard Technology

Project Jacquard is a team at Google
that focuses on making interactions with technology more natural. The motivation
behind this is really simple, Google needs products that make it easier for
you to use your devices. Whether that’s through touch screens or voice commands
or digital assistants.. it all allows you to use your tech more seamlessly. The
million dollar idea Project Jacquard has come up with is interactive clothing.
Materials that can basically be a touch screen for your electronics. If you
replace the threads in typical fabrics with conductive threads then you can
create garments that detect and recognize a variety of simple touch
gestures. Now almost exactly a year after Project Jacquard was announced Google’s teamed
up with Levi’s and they’re ready to make smart garment history with their
first actual product. A Levi’s Trucker Jacket designed specifically for commuting bikers.
There’s two parts to the jacket that we know of so far. It has a patch of
conductive fibers in the left sleeve that let you tap or swipe across the
jean surface and toggle a series of commands like silencing calls and querying Google Maps for directions The Smart Tag sensor is also on the left cuff but
camouflaged as a button and really does all the work. The Smart Tag is what wirelessly connects to your phone and allows your cuff to interact with your devices. Kind of like an Apple Watch. It’s charged with a USB plug in, touch sensitive and removable. When you take this sensor off
the jacket can be washed just like any other normal article of clothing. Together the sensor and the patch allow you to skip songs, access directions and even give you suggestions for nearby stores
and coffee shops. Things that would make it easier for you to use your phone and
ride your bike across town. The first batch of jackets won’t be out until next
Spring and Google hasn’t told us anything about pricing yet. Those are pretty much all the details we know about the jacket so far but this
leaves us with so many more questions. Are the smart tags interchangeable between
garments? Are we gonna soon see smart home products like couches that will be
touch interactive? Let me know what your thoughts are on this. Do you have any
ideas for what developers could potentially create with Jacquard
technology? Join the discussion and tell me what you think about all of this.. For
