Improve Your Bunny Hops With A Hop-O-Meter | Mountain Bike Skills

(smooth music) – In this series of videos we’re sharing ways to improve your mountain bike riding immediately. And today we’re looking at my tip, which is the bunny hop. It will make you a better
mountain bike rider tomorrow then you were today. That is a fact. Now it’s easy to overlook the bunny hop because we all think we’ve mastered it, but today we’re gonna look at a way to learn it on the trail, which means it’s going to be usable and really effective, and
transform how high you can do it. And we’re gonna do it with this log and Neal. – Hello. (bike squeals) – So let’s get to the first step. (gravel crushing) – Okay, so, for the front
wheel lift, or the manual, stand nice and tall in your ready position and drop your hips down towards
the saddle and then back. You really need that L shape. Basically then, your arms should lock and the bars come back with you. Don’t pull on the bars. – Nice one, Neal. Now we’re gonna take that simple move to the log itself. And the idea is that you lift the front cleanly over the log, so you’ve got to think about your timing. Front wheel over and then just
let the back wheel bump over, don’t worry about it. – [Neal] To knife the real wheel lift and let’s pretend you’ve
already done the manual, now you need to send
them hips up and forward, towards the handlebars, get
your toes down and scoot back against the pedals a little bit. – Now to the exciting bit. We’re gonna link the two things together. So it’s putting this log to use. Front wheel over, and then the back. – [Neal] Get that bit dialled
and go a little bit faster. You’ll have to do the two
things a bit closer together and that will become a bunny hop. Bunny hop mastered, perfect,
high five that one Neal. But, hang on a second. Let’s take this technique
to its absolute limits because the higher you
go with a bunny hop, the more confidence that you
can get with this technique. It’s going to turn into gold on the trail. Here’s how you can do it. Now a bunny hop is gonna transform
your mountain bike riding I promise, but a Hop-O-Meter is gonna transform your bunny hop. So let’s build one, it’s
super simple, super fun. You’re gonna laugh loads and probably be able to– I could
build a kitchen afterwards. – Probably, yeah. – Yeah probably. Here’s the shopping list
for a fantastic Hop-O-Meter. First of all, you’re gonna
need a few lengths of wood. (wood crashing) A plastic piece of conduit to hop over. Some coloured tape, so you can make sure you can see your conduit pipe. You’re gonna need a saw to cut that wood. Some L shaped brackets
will be really useful when building some legs
for your Hop-O-Meter. (metal crashing) Bulldog clips. (plastic crashing) A tape measure. (metal crashing) And a black pen. (metal crashing) And last off, you’re
gonna need some screws. (screws crashing) – [Both] Cut. (wood sawing) – So these are gonna be our uprights. – Yes, so, first off I
recon we should mark off every 10 centimetres. So you’re going up in stages. So we’ve marked it all out, pretty good, from 10 centimetres to
five centimetres, going up. So that’ll be good. Now all we need to do is
somehow get these to mount on legs like this, but I’m gonna make them a
bit bigger with that piece of wood there. So if I’m doing that, Mark, do you wanna tape that thing up? – Pass me the tape, I’ll make
sure we can see our pole. Now you might be thinking, this looks like something that
doesn’t seem that important, but to be able to visualise
what you’re hoping over is really important, so making the pole that you’re gonna bunny hop really visible is gonna make a big difference whenever you start practising . (wood sawing) – [Neal] By all means this is not the tidiest way of making a bunny hop bar. (hammering, wood drilling) (passing music) – [Neal] Does this one need two? (drilling) No this is embarrassing. (drilling) – [Mark] So now you’ve
got your bunny hop part, all you need to do is
make sure that you jump it that way, so the pole knocks off. (plastic crashing) Not this way and knocks the poles down. Let’s go do some bunny hops! – High five it. Yes! Team work! – So we’ve brought the
Hop-O-Meter out into the woods and the best thing about using this, is riding with your mates. Because you can challenge each other, they’re gonna push each other on and get higher and higher. And I promise, the confidence
you get with that bunny hop, the better it’s gonna get and
the more you’re gonna use it. So, let’s start hoping that stick. – [Man] I’m gonna need some
practise the road is fatty. – [Man In Neon Yellow] What we on? – We are on– Go on Andy’s up. Oh he’s gonna go high. It’s falling. Yeah that’s a little bit annoying. (cheering) (laughing) And there you have the beaut of it, if you knock the stick
off, it just rolls away and you’re safe and you know that you’re struggling at that height, so you can use this Hop-O-Meter to really bunny hop and
improve in a safe way. Give it another go, go
on Neal, one more go. – [Man] No he’s quite high, listen. (cheering) – That was close. – [Man] That was good, dude! – Like that much. Thanks for watching, hope your bunny hops improve, look out for some more how to improve your mountain
