Georgia Tech Single-A All-Stars – The Center (2016)

♪♪ Hi. Welcome to The Center.
I’m your host, Aliyah Smith. The Single-A All-Stars are an
élite intramural basketball team here at Georgia Tech. Not only have they won the
Intramural Championship here, but they’ve also won it
regionally and nationally. I have the chance to talk
to head coach Mark Williams and a key player, Matt Smith,
about their success. Tell me a little bit
about your team. Matt Smith: Um, we’re a group
of guys composed of undergrads and grad students
here at Georgia Tech. Um, we just came together
through playing up here at the CRC, playing pick-up. We all played really well
together, and so we decided
to form a team. And this is a team that’s been
together for actually about five
or six years. So a lot of the guys who’ve
played together and were friends would recruit new players
to come on the team. So actually, when I came in to
do grad school at Georgia Tech, they approached me to play
on the Single-A All-Stars team. Being a grad student and
working in the lab all the time, it’s nice to have a release to where you can come play
basketball and get some exercise
and stay in shape. Aliyah: But how intense are
the intramural sports here? Matt Smith: So, you know, during
the season, the schoolyear, it’s more laid back, but once
you get to the tournament, um, you know, there’s a lot
of people there watching. You have friends and family
coming in. You have referees. And people take pride
in representing their school, even though it is━it’s still
the intramural level, so… It’s not quite collegiate
Division I type level intensity out there, but guys are
definitely competing and people want to win. Aliyah Smith: How close are you
with your teammates? Matt Smith: You know, we joke
around about it being kind of the basketball
fraternity. A lot of these guys have turned
into some of my best friends since I’ve been in grad school. It’s, you know, more importantly
than the exercise, it has been a social outlet,
as well, to where we can all come together and be friends. Aliyah Smith: How do you feel
being a coach, like when you see
your players out there winning games and winning
championships? Mark Williams: You know,
multiple feelings, honestly. I feel of course elated
when we━when I see the guys come together for the ultimate
goal of winning but also to see guys grow
individually. And I marvel at the individual
talents that come together to be a team, because there are a lot of teams
that have arguably more talent than we have, but they’re not
a cohesive unit. Aliyah Smith: What does the team
mean to you off the court? Mark Williams: Oh, they mean
a great deal to me. They’re like family.
They’re like my little brothers. I mean, you know, if I can
support them at an event, at a function, at graduation,
I’m going to do it. I’m going to be there.
This is a brotherhood. You know, it really is like
a fraternity in a lot of ways, and so we care about each other,
and we just, you know, we just want to see each other
happy and as friends. Aaliyah Smith: The Single-A
All-Stars are a shining example of how intramural sports
can bring students together on campus to achieve success, and they can also take their
talents to a national level by representing Georgia Tech. Many thanks to Matt Smith
and Mark Williams for their time today. I’m your host, Aliyah Smith, and thank you for watching
The Center.
