Football sign-ups, Meet the Crimeline’s creator, Ending bullying – Norfolk Perspectives

>>>THIS TIME ON NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES, WE’RE
GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT FOOTBALL REGISTRATION AND ALL ABOUT OUR POST.
NORFOLK POLICE DEPARTMENT TALKS ABOUT BULLYING, AND THE CRIME LINE CELEBRATES 30 YEARS RIGHT
HERE ON NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES.>>>WELCOME TO NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES.
I’M BOB BATCHER. WELL, IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR, AND I DECIDED
THE BEST WAY TO MAKE THE TRANSITION WAS TO HAVE SOMEBODY COME IN AND TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL.
SO MARIA BARNER, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR RPOS, HOW ARE YOU DOING.
>>I’M GREAT. I’M GREAT.
>>WE’RE NOT TALKING ABOUT SUNDAY AFTERNOON, SATURDAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
ACTUALLY GETTING OUT THERE AND DOING IT YOURSELF, RIGHT?
>>TALKING ABOUT THE YOUTH FOOTBALL.>>OH, YOUTH.
OH, GOOD. I CAN RELAX.
>>WE WON’T HAVE YOU DOING ANYTHING.>>SO IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR.
>>YEP.>>SUMMER IS OVER.
>>YEP. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?
>>ARE THE KIDS READY FOR FOOTBALL?>>THEY’RE READY.
ALREADY OUT THERE PRACTICING NOW.>>HOW OLD OF KIDS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?
>>THEY START AS YOUNG AS FIVE. WE HAVE A JUNIOR AND SENIOR FLAG LEAGUE, SO
THEY’RE NOT IN FULL EQUIPMENT, SO THEY CAN START AS YOUNG AS 5.
WHEN THEY GET INTO EQUIPMENT, IT STARTS AT 8, 8 TO 14.
>>I WAS GOING TO SAY, HOW DO YOU HAVE SHOULDER PADS GIG — BIG ENOUGH FOR A 5-YEAR-OLD.
>>8-YEAR-OLD.>>DO THEY HIT EACH OTHER IN PEEWEE?
>>THEY DO IN TRAINING. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THE COACHES ON THE FIELD
WITH THEM, THOUGH, SO DIFFERENT FROM THE BIGGER BOYS THAT PLAY.
>>I’VE GOT TO ASK. YOU’VE BEEN ON THE FIELD WITH THESE 5-YEAR-OLDS,
RIGHT?>>IT’S CUTE.
>>DESCRIBE THE MOMS.>>WELL, IT DEPENDS.
I LIKE THAT AGE GROUP BETTER, BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT AS SERIOUS AS THE OLDER KIDS, BUT SOME
OF THEM ARE. SOME OF THE MOMS ARE A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT
HOW HARD THEIR KIDS GET HIT AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
>>HOW ABOUT THE DADS?>>OH, NO, IT’S JUST GET UP, SUCK IT UP, KEEP
PLAYING.>>SO SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE.
>>NO.>>LET’S KIND OF REWIND A LITTLE BIT.
IT’S THE END OF THE SUMMER, BUT IT’S BEEN ONE HECK OF A SUMMER FOR RPOS, HASN’T IT?
>>AWESOME.>>THE LAST TIME YOU WERE ON, I HAVE TAKEN
SOME HEAT FOR THE LAST TIME YOU WERE ON.>>YOU MUST BE TALKING ABOUT THE BOXING.
>>I WASN’T GOING TO SAY, BUT NOW THAT YOU’VE BROUGHT IT UP, SHE KIND OF MADE A FOOL OF
ME.>>OH, NO.
>>I DID IT ALL ON MY OWN.>>YOU DID A GREAT JOB.
>>I’M TELLING PEOPLE, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OLYMPICS, I PRACTICED WITH HER, AND SHE WILL
DENY EVER DOING THAT.>>NO.
SHE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.>>GO ON YOUTUBE AND YOU’LL SEE ME WITH COACH.
>>SHE’S IN LONDON RIGHT NOW. THE BOXING EVENTS ARE ON CNBC.
YOU CAN SEE HER ACTUALLY IN THE CORNER WHEN U.S.A. IS BOXING FOR MEN AND WOMEN, JUST TELLING
THEM WHAT TO DO. SHE’S NOT ACTUALLY BOXING.
>>SHE’S GOOD.>>VERY GOOD.
>>YOU JUST CAME BACK FROM A TRIP.>>WE TOOK HER BOXERS TO KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI
FOR THE RINGSIDE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.>>AND YOU BROUGHT THEM BACK?
>>YES, AND WE BROUGHT BACK TWO CHAMPIONS.>>COOL.
>>WE’VE GOT CHAMPIONS, AND HOPEFULLY SHE’LL BRING BACK SOME CHAMPIONS FROM LONDON, AS
WELL.>>SO REALLY, IT’S NOT JUST OUR SLEEPY LITTLE
REC PROGRAM ANYMORE, IS IT?>>NO.
WE’VE GONE INTERNATIONAL NOW.>>YOU’VE GOT THE CAMP ALL SUMMER LONG, RIGHT?
>>UH-HUH.>>GETTING READY TO WIND DOWN A LITTLE BIT.
WE JUST FINISHED UP R.B.I. BASEBALL SEASON AND SOCCER.
NOW WE’RE GETTING READY TO START FOOTBALL. REC CENTERS ARE STARTING OFF SCHOOL PROGRAMS.
NO REAL DOWN TIME. WE JUMP RIGHT INTO FALL.
>>OUTDOOR POOLS ARE GENERALLY CLOSED, INDOOR POOL RAMPING UP.
>>RIGHT, RIGHT. CLASSES ABOUT TO START, REGISTRATION FOR THE
FALL, ALL OF THAT GOOD STUFF.>>LET ME ASK YOU.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUST GOOD OLD-FASHIONED FUN AND ATHLETICS?
>>IT’S A LITTLE BIT MORE ORGANIZATION WITH THE ATHLETICS.
YOU HAVE COACHES. YOU HAVE SOME DIRECTION AS OPPOSED TO JUST
RUNNING WILD AND PLAYING AROUND. YOU CAN ACTUALLY HAVE SOME DIRECTION, AND
WE KIND OF PULL THAT ENERGY TOGETHER TOWARDS SOME COMMON GOAL.
>>OKAY. YOU’VE GOT A PARENT OUT THERE WATCHING, AND
THEY’RE ALSO GOING THROUGH THE SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST, GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL, AND THE CLASSES,
AND THE PHYSICS CLASS, MATH, CALCULUS, WHATEVER, WHATEVER.
HOW DOES THAT ATHLETICS THEN FALL? THERE HAS BEEN THAT PUBLIC DISCUSSION ABOUT
ATHLETICS.>>UH-HUH.
>>DO WE REALLY HAVE TIME FOR IT WHEN WE’RE FALLING BEHIND ON SOL?
>>I THINK YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. YOU KIND OF DON’T JUST WANT TO BEAT THE KIDS
WITH SCHOOL. IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE THAT ASPECT OF SPORTS
IN THERE. WE ALSO THREE IN EDUCATION IN OUR ATHLETIC
PROGRAM AS WELL. WE JUST CAME UP WITH AN ALL ACADEMIC THEME
FOR ALL OF OUR SPORTS. WE ENCOURAGE THE KIDS TO ALSO DO THEIR SCHOOLWORK.
WE ENCOURAGE THE COACHES TO ALSO SERVE AS POSITIVE ROLE MODELS TO KEEP THE KIDS AGRADES
UP. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL.
WE’RE FOCUSING ON GRADES IN SCHOOL AS WELL SO THEY KNOW I’M WANT TO MAKE THAT ALL ACADEMIC
TEAM, SO I’M GOING TO DO WHAT I HAVE TO DO IN SCHOOL AND ON THE FIELD AS WELL.
>>GOING BACK TO FOOTBALL, I’VE GOT TO BE HONEST.
THE TV STATIONS ALL PAY ATTENTION TO HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ON FRIDAY AND, OF COURSE,
ODU AND ALL OF THAT. WE’LL PUT THAT ONE IN THE PARKING LOT.
BUT HOW DOES THE REC PROGRAM, FOOTBALL PROGRAM PARALLEL WITH HIGH SCHOOL?
IS IT KIND OF.>>AS FAR AS ATTENDANCE OR.
>>YEAH, ANY CONNECTION.>>WE PLAY OUR GAMES AT POW HAT AN STADIUM
AT ODU. WE’RE WORKING WITH NORFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOLS
TO GET GAMES THERE DURING THE WEEK AS WELL. WE HAVE COACHES FROM THE SCHOOLS THAT COME
OUT AND WATCH OUR GAMES AND ARE LOOKING FOR KIDS, AS WELL.
IT STARTS YOUNG. WE START GETTING THOSE GOOD 13, 14-YEAR-OLDS.
IT IS A REC PROGRAM. IT’S NOT A TRAVEL OR AAU TYPE, BUT IT’S STILL
OPEN. ANYBODY CAN COME WATCH IT.
IT’S HUGE. WE DON’T REALLY HAVE TO DO TOO MUCH ADVERTISING
FOR IT. WE HAD, LIKE, 79 TEAMS LAST YEAR.
>>SO BY THE TIME THIS SHOW AIRS, THE TEEN SIGNUPS WILL BE CLOSED.
>>CORRECT, CORRECT. BUT WE’LL STILL BE REGISTERING INDIVIDUAL
PLAYERS AT THAT TIME. SO IF THEY WANT TO CALL, THEY CAN CALL THE
LAKEWOOD ATHLETIC OFFICE AND GET INFORMATION ABOUT HOW THEY CAN JOIN THE TEAM.
>>I’VE GOT TO ASK THIS QUESTION. WHEN I WAS 12, 13, I WORE GLASSES, AND MY
MOTHER PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE BROUGHT ME TO SIGN UP.
BUT WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO MY MOM ABOUT ME SIGNING UP?
I WAS TALL AND GANG ELLE.>>IT INCREASES THE COORDINATION, CAN MAKE
YOU THAT MUCH BETTER AT EVERYTHING ELSE, NOT JUST ABOUT FOOTBALL.
GETTING YOU ON THAT TEAM ENVIRONMENT, WORKING AROUND OTHER KIDS AND COACHES.
IT’S A GREAT EXPERIENCE. I THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD AT LEAST TRY.
IT IT’S NOT FOR EVERYBODY. BUT YOU’VE GOT TO AT LEAST TRY.
>>MY MOTHER’S RESPONSE WAS, BUT YOU’LL GET HURT.
>>YOU CAN GET HURT ANYWHERE. MIGHT AS WELL BE IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.
>>IN A BUBBLE. THAT’S WHY I’M SITTING IN THIS CHAIR, BECAUSE
I COULD GET HURT. THIS IS ANOTHER PERSONAL QUESTION.
YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL REVIEWER OF ATHLETICS AND SPORTS.
WHAT DO YOU PLAY?>>NOT FOOTBALL.
I PLAY FLAG FOOTBALL.>>FLAG FOOTBALL.
>>SOFTBALL IS MY BIGGEST SPORT. I PLAYED IN COLLEGE AND I STILL PLAY NOW.
>>YOU’VE GOTTEN TO KNOW ME OVER THE YEARS. WHAT SHOULD I PLAY?
>>I TOLD YOU TO PLAY SOFTBALL. WE’VE GOT A SPOT ON OUR TEAM.
COME ON OUT. WE PLAY FRIDAY NIGHTS.
>>REALLY?>>YES.
>>CO-ED?>>BIG BALL?
>>BIG BALL.>>WHAT OTHER SPORTS DO WE HAVE FOR GUYS LIKE
ME.>>WE HAVE VOLLEYBALL GOING ON AS WELL.
>>I LIKE VOLLEYBALL. I’VE REALLY GOTTEN RECONNECTED WITH VOLLEYBALL
DURING THE OLYMPICS.>>ARE YOU STARTING TO GET MORE INTERESTS
DURING THE OLYMPICS OF PEOPLE SAYING, HEY, CAN WE DO THAT HERE?
>>THE GYMNASTICS PART, BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE A GYMNASTICS PROGRAM IN NORFOLK.
NOW THAT PEOPLE SEE GABBY DOUGLAS OUT THERE, THEY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT OUR GYMNASTICS.
>>THERE ARE GYMNASTICS THROUGH NORFOLK, BUT NOT US.
>>I WILL NEVER ASK ABOUT GYMNASTICS. I PROMISE.
>>WHEN IS FOOTBALL REGISTRATION?>>GOING ON NOW.
PLAYER REGISTRATION FIRST DAY WILL HAVE STARTED BY NOW.
BUT TEAM PLAYER REGISTRATION WILL GO ON THROUGH THE SECOND WEEK OF THE SEASON.
>>THE COST?>>IT DEPENDS ON THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.
WE CHARGE A 5-DOLLAR ATHLETIC CARD FEE. OTHER ASSOCIATIONS MAY CHARGE YOU EXTRA FOR
EQUIPMENT AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE. WE DON’T TURN ANYONE AWAY.
>>COOL. THANKS A LOT FOR BEING A GOOD SPORT, KEEPING
US UP-TO-DATE ON WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE COACH AND THE OLYMPICS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY,
DOING GREAT STUFF FOR THE KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY.>>THANK YOU.
I APPRECIATE IT.>>>WHEN WE COME BACK, WE’RE GOING TO TALK
ABOUT BULLYING, AND THE NORFOLK POLICE DEPARTMENT IS GOING TO BRING SOME SPECIAL IDEAS.
STAY TUNED.>>>IN THE SMALL TOWN OF NEW YORK, A BOY WAS
BORN TO AN ALL AMERICANFALL. THE ODDS OF HIM ACHIEVING HIS DREAM IN THE
FASHION INDUSTRY? ONE IN 23 MILLION.
THE ODDS OF HAVING A CHILD DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM?
1 IN 110. I AM TOMMY HILL FIGGER, AND MY FAMILY IS AFFECTED
BY AUTISM. LEARN MORE AT AUTISM SPEAKS DOT ORG SLASH
SIGNS.>>>WELCOME BACK TO NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES.
FOR THE NEXT FEW MINUTES, WE’RE GOING TO GET REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT A SERIOUS TOPIC THAT’S
OCCURRING IN OUR COMMUNITY, NOT JUST IN SCHOOLS, BUT THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY.
I MADE A COMMENT AT THE LAST SEGMENT THAT MY MOM SAID YOU CAN’T PLAY FOOTBALL BECAUSE
YOU COULD GET HURT. SO PAINT A MENTAL PICTURE.
I KNOW THIS IS A TOPIC THAT TOUCHES ME PERSONALLY AND STILL KIND OF HAS SOME MEMORIES OF SEVENTH
GRADE AND A BULLY, AND WE’RE TALKING BULLYING. RIKKI SCHWAB,NBD HOWEVER, HOW ARE YOU DOING?
>>I’M GOOD.>>AND TROY MILLS, SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER.
I HAD ULTIMATE RESPECT FOR YOU WITH JUST THE SHEER SIZE AND THE BELT, BUT YOU SPEND YOUR
DAY WITH THE KIDS.>>YES, I DO.
>>GOOD KIDS. I DON’T WANT TO TALK VERY LONG WITHOUT TALKING
ABOUT THE GOOD KIDS. I MEAN, YOU GUYS ARE REALLY RUNNING ACROSS
SOME REALLY SPECIAL KIDS NOWADAYS, RIGHT?>>EXACTLY.
>>AND THAT’S THE UNFORTUNATE PART ABOUT IT. WE’VE GOT A VERY SMALL MINORITY THAT ARE RULING
THE ROOST OR THEY THINK THEY ARE?>>EXACTLY.
>>YES, THEY THINK THEY ARE.>>YOUR EXPERIENCES IN HIGH SCHOOL, RIKKI,
YOUR EXPERIENCE IS IN THE COMMUNITY?>>I DID FOUR YEARS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ALMOST
A YEAR AT NORVIEW HIGH SCHOOL.>>I LIKE YOU SAID YOU DID — IT’S LIKE YOU
SERVED TIME, MIDDLE SCHOOL.>>YEAH.
>>THAT’S KIND OF THE TIME PERIOD THAT I CAN REMEMBER A KID WHO WAS THE BULLY, AND HE WAS
DAGGONE PROUD OF BEING THE BULLY, THINKING HE SAW ME WITNESS SOMETHING HE WAS DOING,
AND I WASN’T ABOUT TO TELL A SOUL. BUT FOR THE NEXT WEEK, IT WAS THE MOST HELLACIOUS
OF MY LIFE, NOT THAT HE DID ANYTHING TO ME. I WAS JUST AFRAID OF THE RETRIBUTIONS.
>>IS THAT KIND OF THE POWER OF THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN WITH BULLYING?
>>I THINK SO, YEAH, AND IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, IT HAPPENS A LOT.
THE KIDS REALLY DON’T KNOW HOW TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE, BECAUSE, LIKE OFFICER MILLS SAID,
WHEN THEY GET TO HIGH SCHOOL, YOU KNOW, IT’S A LITTLE BIT EASIER FOR THEM, BUT IN MIDDLE
SCHOOL, THEY’RE STILL TRYING TO KIND OF FIND THEMSELVES.
SO THEY FEEL KIND OF ISOLATED, I THINK.>>SO WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT IT?
THAT’S THE BIG QUESTION, ISN’T IT?>>I MEAN, IT’S PRETTY SIMPLE.
FIRST, YOU HAVE TO MAKE THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO COME TO YOU AND EXPLAIN WHAT’S GOING
ON.>>AS A PARENT, ADULT OR RESOURCE OFFICER?
>>RESOURCE OFFICER, OR TEACHER OR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR.
THEY’VE GOT TO HAVE THE PROPER RESOURCES TO GO TO AND FEEL COMFORTABLE TO COME TO YOU
AND YOU’RE ABLE TO HELP THEM. IT’S THE ONES WHO ARE AFRAID AND KEEP IT TO
THEMSELVES THAT USUALLY IT GETS KIND OF OUT OF HAND BEFORE YOU FIND OUT, BUT EVEN THEN,
IT COMES TO SITUATION WHERE YOU’RE GOING TO FIND OUT.
>>BUT IF I COME AND TELL YA, I’M SNITCHING, AREN’T I?
>>I KNOW THAT TERM IS USED A LOT AROUND THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN SITUATIONS, BUT IT CAN BE
DUN NONE MUSSILY, FIRST OF ALL. SECOND OF ALL, I MEAN, TO ME, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT
THAT WE DEAL WITH THE SITUATION. TO ME I FEEL LIKE IF YOU BRING THE SITUATION
TO ME, I WILL WORK AROUND EVERYONE OBJECT — OBSTACLE I CAN TO TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM
WITHOUT INVOLVING YOU AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SO YOU CAN FEEL COMFORT ABOUT IF YOU HAVE
A PROBLEM TO CAN AND EXPLAIN IT TO ME, THAT WAY I CAN HELP YOU.
>>YOU WERE SAYING PRIOR TO TAPING, BY THE TIME THEY GET TO HIGH SCHOOL, THEY’VE KIND
OF FORMED THEIR GROUP. THAT’S GOOD AND BAD, ISN’T IT?
>>EXACTLY. SOMETIMES YOU COULD GET MIXED UP IN THE WRONG
CROWD. EVEN WITH THAT, YOU KNOW, FROM MY EXPERIENCES,
FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN, WHEN KIDS ARE — YOU SEE SOME KIDS WHO HAVE POTENTIAL.
SO IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS, YOU CAN JUST ADDRESS THAT KID PERSONALLY.
I PERSONALLY IN THE SCHOOLS, I TALK TO A LOT OF KIDS PERSONALLY.
IF I SEE THEY HAVE POTENTIAL BUT IT FEELS LIKE THEY MIGHT BE GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION,
JUST TRY TO EXPLAIN TO THEM THE PATH THEY’RE ON AND WHAT THEY’RE HEADING TOWARD, AND JUST
GIVE THEM AN OPTION. A LOT OF KIDS DON’T REALIZE THEY HAVE OPTIONS.
>>SO JUST KIND OF SOME OPEN, HONEST CONVERSATION. THAT’S WHAT I’M HEARING FROM YOU.
>>EXACTLY.>>AND HOW ABOUT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL?
TALK ABOUT OPEN AND HONEST. THAT CAN BE CUTTING, CAN’T IT, BECAUSE THAT
PERSON IS UGLY.>>LIKE I SAID, IT IS DIFFICULT FOR THEM,
BECAUSE THEY’RE STILL FINDING THEMSELVES, AND PUBERTY PLAYS A MAJOR PART IN THAT.
BUT LIKE OFFICER MILLS SAID, IT’S MORE ABOUT HAVING, YOU KNOW, ONE-ON-ONE TIME, AND YOU
SEE KIDS THAT HAVE A LOT OF POTENTIAL, BUT MAYBE THEY’RE LACKING SELF-ESTEEM TO GO IN
THE RIGHT DIRECTION. AS SRO’S WE ALWAYS PULL THEM ASIDE AND TALK
TO THEM. LIKE OFFICER MILLS SAID, YOU KNOW, LET THEM
KNOW WHAT THEY CAN DO AND THAT WE SEE POSITIVE THINGS IN THEM TO TRY TO GET THEM IN THE RIGHT
DIRECTION.>>IN THE FIRST SEGMENT WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT
FOOTBALL REGISTRATION AND KIND OF BUILDING THE CHARACTER ON THE FIELD, THERE IS AN OUTLET
TO THAT. YOU REGISTER FOR CLASSES.
HOW DOES A PARENT OR RESPONSIBLE GUARDIAN ADULT OF A GROWING KID IN MIDDLE SCHOOL OR
HIGH SCHOOL, IS THERE A PLACE THEY CAN GO TO TO FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION AND TALK ABOUT
IT?>>AS FAR AS BULLYING?
>>YEAH.>>WELL, FROM MY EXPERIENCES, A LOT OF TIMES,
I’VE HAD ISSUES WHERE THE PARENTS WILL COME TO THE SCHOOL.
ONCE THEY REALIZE THERE IS A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER IN THE SCHOOL, A LOT OF TIMES THEY
CALL UP TO THE SCHOOL TO SPEAK DIRECTLY TO ME, ESPECIALLY IF A PARENT IS REALLY CONCERNED
AND FEELS THE KID NEEDS AN OUTLET. THEY’LL CALL THE SCHOOL AND TALK DIRECTLY
TO ME. AND USUALLY WHAT I’LL DO IS I’LL GET WITH
THEIR TEACHERS, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, BRING THEM INTO MY OFFICE, AND WE ALL GET TOGETHER
AND TRY TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.>>THE FIRST LINE MIGHT BE TO TALK TO THE
KID.>>RIGHT.
WE’RE GOING TO USE THIS YEAR TO KIND OF BRING MORE ATTENTION TO THIS TOPIC.
CAN I ASK YOU ON CAMERA, WILL YOU COME BACK AND TALK MORE ABOUT IT?
>>SURE, ABSOLUTELY.>>SURE.
>>WHEN I HAVE YOU BACK ON — WE’RE GOING TO BE RUNNING OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WEEKS
A PSA THAT OUR INTERNS DID WHO ARE COMING IN TO TALK ABOUT BULLYING, AND I THINK IT
REALLY HITS HOME FROM THEIR POINT OF VIEW. SO FOR THE VIEWER, BE CAN LOOKING OUT FOR
THAT PSA. FOR YOU GUYS, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE
DOING TO BRING COMFORT TO A KID WHO MIGHT BE LOST.
APPRECIATE IT.>>THANK YOU.
>>>WHEN WE COME BACK, WE’RE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT CRIMELINE IS 30 YEARS OLD AND WHY.
STAY TUNED.>>>THE PAIN WILL NOT CONTROL US.
IT WILL NEVER BREAK US, DEFINE US OR KEEP US STILL, BECAUSE ARTHRITIS CAN’T BEAT US
IF WE BEAT IT FIRST. IN THE FIGHT AGAINST ARTHRITIS, YOU NEED A
WEAPON. WHAT’S YOURS?
VISIT THE ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION AT FIGHT ART — ARTHRITIS PAIN DOT ORG.
>>>WELCOME BACK TO NORFOLK PERSPECTIVES. FROM TALKING ABOUT ANONYMITY IN DEALING WITH
BULLYING, WE’RE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT THREE GUYS THAT DON’T WANT ANYBODY TO KNOW
WHO THEY ARE. THEY’RE WITH CRIMELINE.
CONRAD GREIF, HOW ARE YOU DOING?>>I’M DOING FINE.
>>COFOUNDER WITH NORFOLK CRIMELINE, 30 YEARS OLD.
YOU CAME UP WITH IT WHEN I WAS 18, 19 YEARS OLD?
>>PROBABLY IN THE 20s.>>AND WARREN STEWART, YOU’RE A BORED — BOARD
MEMBER WITH CRIMELINE AND ALSO WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.
>>AND THEN JOHN SHAPPELL, THE CURRENT PRESIDENT AFTER NORFOLK CRIMELINE.
YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED THE WHOLE 30 YEARS TOO?>>NO.
I JUST CAME ON ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO.>>AND THEY ELECTED YOU PRESIDENT RIGHT AWAY.
>>HE SAID I COULDN’T DO ANY SOLICITING BUT I WOULD BE GLAD TO SERVE AS AN OFFICER.
>>I KNOW IT’S 1-888-LOCK YOU UP.>>WHO KNOWS THE NUMBER?
>>RIGHT HERE. I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO ASK IT.
1-888-562-5887.>>THAT’S A RESOURCEFUL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER
WHO KNOWS WHERE TO GET THE INFORMATION.>>ALWAYS HAS A PAD TO TAKE NOTES.
>>CONRAD, LET’S GO BACK 30 YEARS, WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE REGION, AND WHY DID YOU INTRODUCE
THIS ANONYMOUS PHONE LINE?>>THIS THING STARTED IN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW
MEXICO BY A LIEUTENANT IN OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT, AND I’LL THINK OF THAT NAME IN A FEW SECONDS,
THAT AS I SHARED WITH YOU HAD THIS THOUGHT, IF WE’VE GOT TO PAY SNITCHES TO SOLVE CRIMES,
WHY DON’T WE OPEN THIS UP AND LET THE GENERAL PUBLIC SHARE IN THE REWARDS AND ANONYMITY
FOR THE INFORMATION THAT WILL HELP US GREATLY, AND IT JUST MUSHROOMED ON THE NUMBER OF CRIMES
THAT THEY HAD UNSOLVED THAT THEY STARTED TO SOLVE, AND THIS SAME PROCESS WENT TO MANY
OF THE OTHER POLICE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, AND IT SPREAD.
SO BACK IN THE MID ’70s, 75, 76, SOMEWHERE IN THAT CORRIDOR, CHIEF GRANT DID HIS HOMEWORK
AND WENT TO THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. BEAR IN MIND, HE WAS THE FIRST TO IMPLEMENT
THIS PROGRAM. WENT TO THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND SAID I
WANT TO IMPLEMENT THIS IN THE CITY OF NORFOLK, AND I NEED YOUR HELP.
HELP ME PUT IT TOGETHER WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE. AT THAT TIME, THEY WERE A LITTLE RELUCTANT.
I DON’T KNOW WHY. BUT THEY ASKED IF MS. CAROL WOULD START HELPING
WITH IT. IN THE MEANTIME, CHIEF BRANT KNEW WHO HE WANTED
TO PUT AS THE LEADERS OF THE CRIMELINE PROGRAM, AND HE ASKED ME AS ONE OF THOSE COFOUNDERS,
BECAUSE I WAS DOING THIS ALREADY WITH THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AS THE PERSON FOR
THE BANK, WHICH WAS THEN NATIONAL BANK OF COMMERCE AND VIRGINIA NATIONAL, HANDLING SECURITY
AND BANK ROBBERIES AND SO FORTH, TO COME AND BE ON THE COMMITTEE.
LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT I ALSO ASKED, IF YOU ALL REMEMBER, TELL A FRIEND, GENE WALTERS,
AND THE OTHER PERSON WAS HENRY CLAY ALL HIMER, ALL FOUR OF US.
WE MET OVER LUNCH IN THE HARBOR CLUB. AT THAT POINT, WE AGREED WE WOULD DO IT.
GENE WALTERS WAS SELECTED TO BE CHAIRMAN. HE SAID I DON’T WANT FULL RESPONSIBILITY.
HE SAID I’LL DO PUBLIC RELATIONS. THAT WAS THE BEST THING WE DID.
HE TOLD EVERYBODY. WAS A REMARKABLE INDIVIDUAL IN HELPING US
IN THAT WAY. CHARLIE ASKED IF I WOULD THEN TAKE OVER ADMINISTRATION
AND OPERATIONS AND BECOME CO-CHAIRMAN, AND I SAID I WOULD BE HONORED.
HOFF HIMER SAID HE WOULD GIVE $25 IF YOU WILL PUT MATCHING 25-DOLLAR DONATIONS SO WE CAN
START THIS PROGRAM, AND THAT’S HOW WE STARTED.>>I’M CONFUSED, BUT PEOPLE SAY I LIVE IN
THAT STATE. DOES IT BELONG TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT?
BECAUSE I SEE IT ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT HOW DOES IT WORK?
>>IT’S A COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT NOT FOR PROFIT CORPORATION RUN BY THE CITIZENS OF NORFOLK,
BUSINESSMEN, PROFESSIONALS WHO GIVE UP THEIR TIME AND ENERGIES TO RAISE THE FUNDS TO PAY
FOR THE REWARDS, WHO WORK IN CONCERT WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO ASSIST THEM IN SOLVING
CRIME.>>BECAUSE I MEAN, I KIND OF JOKINGLY STARTED
THE SEGMENT BY SAYING YOU GUYS REALLY DIDN’T WANT ANYBODY TO KNOW WHO YOU WERE, BECAUSE
THAT REALLY IS THE MAGIC OF THE PROGRAM.>>ANY PERSON WHO GIVES US A TIP THAT LEADS
TO AN ARREST WILL GET A REWARD. THE ANONYMITY OF ANYONE GIVING US A TIP, CERTAINLY
WE NEED TO KEEP THEIR NAMES SECRET, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS WHAT THE CRIMELINE
DOES IS GET THE MONEY TO PAY THE REWARDS THAT RESULTS FROM ARRESTS AND SOLVES CRIMES.
SOMETIMES AN ARREST WILL SOLVE ONE CRIME BUT MORE THAN LIKELY IT WILL SOLVE A WHOLE HOST
OF OTHER CRIMES.>>OH, OKAY.
SO IS IT BEING EFFECTIVE?>>OH, ABSOLUTELY.
WE’RE UP TO ABOUT A HALF MILLION DOLLARS IN PAYOUT.
>>IN ACTUAL PAYOUT?>>IN ACTUAL PAYOUT, YES.
>>SINCE 1981.>>SINCE 1981.
>>BECAUSE I GUESS ONE OF THE CHALLENGES IS YOU WANT TO HAVE SUCCESS, BUT YOU DON’T WANT
TO TELL PEOPLE YOU’RE HAVING SUCCESS, BECAUSE IF YOU’RE HAVING SUCCESS — I MEAN.
>>WE’RE HOPING TO KEEP OUR STREETS A LOT SAFER, AND CERTAINLY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT
IS VERY, VERY SUPPORTIVE OF US. OBVIOUSLY WE WORK HAND IN HAND WITH THEM.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HOPE TO INITIATE THIS FALL IS TESTING.
WARREN IS WORKING — TEXTING. WARREN IS WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH THE SCHOOLS,
AND WE’RE HOPING TO ENABLE OUR STUDENTS TO ACTUALLY TEXT IN TIPS.
WE HAVE SOFTWARE THAT IS SCRAMBLED, SO THERE IS AN — ANONYMITY, AND THEY’LL BE ABLE TO
TEXT THE CRIMELINE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT INDIVIDUALS WHO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WISHES
TO APPREHEND.>>I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS CALLING SAYING
YOU WANT TO BE ON THE SHOW. I VIEW IT AS A REAL COMPLIMENT THAT IT’S A
WAY OF GETTING INFORMATION OUT. BUT HOW DO YOU NORMALLY TRY TO GET YOUR INFORMATION
OUT? I KNOW THEY END EVERY CRIME STORY BY CALLING
1-888-LOCK-YOU-UP.>>COMMUNICATIONS.
>>IS THAT WHAT IT IS.>>ABSOLUTE COMMUNICATIONS, AND IT COMES FROM
YOUR NETWORKS, TV STATIONS AND PEOPLE ON THE STREETS OR HEAR OR READ THE NEWSPAPER, AND
THEY KNOW CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED AND THEY MAY HAVE SEEN SOMETHING OR KNOW SOMETHING
ABOUT THAT CRIME, AND THEN THEY WILL USE THE 1-888 NUMBER AND CALL THE INFORMATION.
THAT’S WHEN ANONYMITY STARTS RIGHT THERE. WE DON’T KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE.
THEY’RE ASSIGNED NUMBERS, IDENTIFIED BY NUMBERS, AND THEN THAT INFORMATION IS GIVEN TO THE
DETECTIVES WORKING THE CASE. IF IT RESULTS IN AN ARREST, AN APPREHENSION,
THEN THAT INFORMATION IS BROUGHT TO THE CRIMELINE BOARD WHO THEN SITS THERE AND REVIEWS IT AND
ASKS THE OFFICERS AND DETECTIVES, WHAT IS YOUR RECOMMENDATION, AND THAT RECOMMENDATION
IS DEBATED AND THEN A REWARD IS GIVEN FOR THAT INFORMATION.
>>WELL, I DON’T WANT TO GIVE IT AWAY, BUT HOW DO YOU GIVE AWAY THE REWARD IF YOU DON’T
KNOW WHO IT WAS?>>I CAN’T TELL YOU.
IT’S ANONYMITY.>>I HAD TO ASK.
I ASK IT EVERY TIME.>>HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE STORY THE MONEY
TREE?>>NO.
>>IT CAN BE HANDED OUT IN MANY NUMBER OF WAYS.
I’M NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND HOW THEY DO IT TODAY, BUT WHEN I WAS CHAIRMAN OF IT, EARNEST MORGAN
WAS OUR CARRIER. WE CALLED HIM THE PIGEON.
AFTER THE REWARDS WERE MADE, AND THIS IS A TRUE STORY.
AFTER THE REWARDS WERE MADE IN THE EARLY DAYS, THE NUMBER WAS GIVEN ON A PIECE OF PAPER TO
ERNIE MORGAN AND THE AMOUNT OF MONEY, AND THE INFORMATION, THE PERSON WHO CALLED IN
AND SAID I’M 12345, HAS ANY AWARD BEEN ASSIGNED, AND THEY SAID YES, IT WILL BE ON GRANDBY AT
9 O’CLOCK TOMORROW MORNING. ERNIE WOULD BE READING THE NUMBER, AND THE
GUY WITH A WALK UP AND SAY I’M 12345, AND HE WOULD HAND HIM THE REWARD.
>>EACH PRESIDENT HAS BROUGHT THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS. CONRAD WAS THE SECOND COFOUNDER AND SECOND
PRESIDENT, AND PRESIDENT JOHN, UNDER HIS ADMINISTRATION, JUST LAST YEAR, THE INTERIM POLICE CHIEF AND
THE INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT COAUTHORED A LETTER, WENT HOME TO MORE THAN 30,000 OF NORFOLK’S
STUDENTS, ENCOURAGING THEM TO DO WHAT THE SCHOOL BOARD WANTS THEM TO DO.
THE MISSION OF THE SCHOOL BARRED IS TO CREATE COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTORS, SUCCESSFUL ONES, AND
THIS LETTER ASKED THEM TO USE THE 1-888-LOCK-YOU-UP NUMBER AND HELP THEM BE PART OF SOLVING CRIMES.
WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT INITIATIVE. EACH PRESIDENT OVER THE PAST 10 OR 15 PRESIDENTS
HAVE BROUGHT A GREAT DEAL OF CONTRIBUTION, AND WE ARE HONORED TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL LAW
ENFORCEMENT.>>>I DEFINITELY WANT TO THANK YOU ALL FOR
WHAT YOU’VE DONE TO REALLY GET THE PROGRAM AS FAR AS IT HAS, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE A CELEBRATION
COMING UP.>>ABSOLUTELY.
>>ON SEPTEMBER 18th, RIGHT?>>SEPTEMBER 18th AT THE NORFOLK YACHT CLUB
RIGHT HERE ON HAMPTON BLFORT. FROM 5 TO 7 P.M., WE’RE GOING TO INVITE ALL
OF THE CITIZENS WHO HAVE ASSISTED US OVER THE YEARS, FORMER BOARD MEMBERS, MEMBERS OF
THE CIVIC LEAGUE, CITY LEADERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, TO COME AND CELEBRATE WITH US WHAT
WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH OVER THESE LAST 30 YEARS.
>>IT WILL BE ONE HECK OF A CELEBRATION.>>AND YOU’RE INVITED, BOB.
>>IT WOULD BE HAN HONOR TO BE — AN HONOR TO BE THERE.
>>WE’D LOVE TO HAVE YOU.>>IS THERE A NUMBER OR WEBSITE THEY CAN GO
TO TO FIND MORE INFORMATION?>>IT WILL BE ON OUR WEBSITE.
>>AND THAT WEBSITE IS? IS THAT IN WARREN’S LETTER.
WE’VE BEEN RUNNING IT ON THE SHOW.>>IT SHOULD BE ON HIS LETTER, YES.
>>NOTHING LIKE HAVING THREE GUYS ON THE SOFA WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE KEEPING SECRETS TO
COME AND PROMOTE. A WONDERFUL PROGRAM.
LOOKING FORWARD TO BEING THERE SEPTEMBER 18th FOR THE 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.
>>ONE THING WE WANT TO MENTION IS OUR FUNDRAISER. WE HAVE TO RAISE MONEY TO PAY FOR THESE AWARDS.
EVERY YEAR, THE LAST FRIDAY OF APRIL, AT THE SOLACE POINT GOLF CLUB, WE HAVE AN ANNUAL
FUNDRAISING GOLF TOURNAMENT.>>DO YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO PLAY GOLF?
>>NO.>>COOL.
SIGN ME UP. THANKS A LOT.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU AND KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.
WHAT IS IT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CELEBRATE. 664-6510.
AND IT’S A WONDERFUL TIME TO BE IN FOREFOLK, JUST — NORFOLK, JUST BUT OF YOU AND YOU AND
YOU. CAPTIONING PROVIDED BY CAPTION ASSOCIATES,
