Fake Paris In China – Is It Anything Like The Original?

There’s an old saying – Paris is always a good idea. It seems China went just a tiny bit too far with the “good idea” and actually built a whole town replicating the famous city. Parisian photographer Francois Prost. He went to Tianducheng to experience the place first hand, and has returned not only with plenty of images, but with interesting insights of a town
that is covered in a fog of myths and mystery. Paris Syndrome. That’s the name of Francois’s project. Where am I, is it in France or…? Also because of the jet lag, it was a very very weird feeling This Paris clone, only half the size of Manhattan, it cost almost 600 million dollars to make this bizarre ambition come to life It’s big, but it’s not like.. Huge, it’s not like a huge city. But, yeah, it’s very distinctive, in terms of urbanism. In the beginning, the intention was to house around ten thousand people. But not everything went as planned. and it was difficult to attract dwellers at first. And I think they built this area to attract rich people, they wanted to sell like very very expensive appartments, People didn’t really follow, so it remained a little bit empty for a few years. Rumours about a ghost city were quick to spread. Probably they made the price lower many people went there and lived there You can see kids in the streets with, like, little tractors, married couples that don’t have enough money to come to Paris, that go to Tianducheng
to get the Eiffel Tower in the back of their kiss picture. The Paris duplicate is a mesmerizing place, recreated as realistically as possible. But a skilled photographer’s eye will always notice the details such as parts of statues. They would have like a head with different arms coming from an antique statue But the head
would be from a more classic statue So they would mix the eras Also the faces, sometimes they could look a little bit Asian. On the one hand – China just completely ripped off an entire city and its authenticity. On the other hand – they did a great job replicating it. Many people criticize this, like okay, you don’t have any personality, bla bla bla, to me it’s just interesting and fascinating.
