Episode 36: Adaptive Recreation

Hello, and welcome to another episode of Squeaky
Wheel Productions’ Disability Series. This week’s topic is adaptive recreation. What is adaptive recreation, who benefits
from it, and why is it important? Kick back and let’s find out! Adaptive recreation refers to any recreational
or leisurely activity that has been adapted for people with disabilities. This can include both indoor and outdoor activities. Although adaptive recreation is intended primarily
for people with disabilities, people of all abilities and skill levels can participate. Now let’s look at some examples of recreation. Adaptive recreation can take on many forms. Examples of recreation include camping, exploration,
leisure, sports, and travel. Activities in these areas can be adapted in
unique ways to make them more inclusive. This means changing specific aspects of each
activity to make them barrier-free, for example, choosing accessible facilities, exploring
alternative techniques, or providing personalized assistance to participants with special needs. Watch this week’s vlog to learn more about
accessible activity design. So, why is adaptive recreation important? Adaptive recreation allows people with disabilities
to participate in the same recreational activities as able-bodied individuals. In addition, recreation has many benefits
including fellowship, empowerment, sustainability, opportunity, growth, and healthiness. So get out there and have some fun! Well, that’s all for this week. Now I want to hear from you.
