DJI – The Last Colonizer: Behind the Scenes

DJI – The Last Colonizer: Behind the Scenes

Storytelling is so fascinating because it
gives us a chance to get a rare, intimate glimpse into someone’s life. You’re visiting people at their worst
and at their best and you’re telling their stories. With how technology has evolved it’s
really allowed us to focus on what is important and that is at the end of the
day, story. When we started to pre-produce and put this project together we
knew we wanted to tell the story of Mr. Riel but we also wanted to capture
the adventure there. We knew that there were going to be a ton
of amazing moments along the way. For the whole trip in our key piece of gear that allowed us to capture those shots in an effective manner was the DJI Osmo, and without that tool we wouldn’t have been able to capture that journey. One of the biggest challenges with this
shoot was finding an effective way to capture Mr. Riel in his natural
environment. Having the gear that we had the Ronin for example, to be able to shoot what he was doing and then keep the shots going and have a slide, have to
follow, and have the focus set and just be able to keep rolling with it. The DJI Inspire played an extremely
important role in this story. Mr. Riel lives three days by horseback away from any other human. Using a drone really allowed us to
capture and put him in that perspective. So the way technology has evolved for
us really empowers us as filmmakers, we’re able to produce content in faraway
places with a small amount of gear and really allow our subjects to be
comfortable because of that. For any filmmaker that’s out there,
like don’t get stuck in that rut, don’t just do your job to pay the bills, find
something that you connect with that keeps you passionate about what you’re
doing.
