Dance Activity Class for Older Adults


This project, which is called Dance Activity
for Older Adults, is funded by the Government of Ontario, so we
come under the Healthy Communities Fund, and it is administered by the Ministry
for Health Promotion and Sport. This is primarily a training program
where we train dance majors from York University’s Dance Department in how
to teach classes specifically for seniors and with health promotion in mind.
– It’s partnership between York University and Black Creek Community
Health Centre, and we’re providing the space and
coordinating the program while York University provides the dance
instruction.
– It reignites my passion for dancing. Seeing them enjoy it so
much really gives me a sense of why I started dancing and
why I’ve continued for all these years. I like to see their progress from the first week until
the end and hear how I’ve affected their life and given them new
experiences.
– So unlike other dance classes where you come in and you learn a dance style
or form of dance, and you do in our classes, but
the classes are also designed specifically for health promotion. So we’re working on cardiac
fitness, flexibility, balance, and on top of that,
hopefully, they have fun and they feel good. Last term we had
over 190 seniors, and now all the numbers aren’t
in yet for attendance yet, but we’re well over 250 seniors. We’re working with ten community centers.
– It’s very, very well-attended. Seniors are really eager to come out and dance
and at the same time get their exercise. We’ve heard that it’s really helped to
raise their spirits. It’s a place that they can come and not just get their exercise,
but also socialize with one another. And we’ve heard of excellent health
benefits as well, some participants have said that it certainly helps with
their sleeping patterns, they are able to sleep better. Some who are living with
diabetes are able to manage their blood sugars much better, and some have even
lost inches off their waists. So it’s really great. It has great health benefits.
