Bemidji Parks and Recreation Considering Expanding Layout of City Skate Park

DENNIS WEIMANN.>>DENNIS: IT LOOKS LIKE THE BEMIDJI SKATE PARK MAY SOON BE EXPANDING ITS LAYOUT. COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTENDED A PUBLIC FORUM TODAY AS THE PARKS AND REC DEPARTMENT DISCUSSED WAYS TO CHANGE THE RULES OF THE SKATE PARK. CURRENTLY BMX BIKEERS AND SCOOTERS ARE PROHIBITED FROM THE PARK. THE SKATE PARK IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP SKATE PARKS IN THE AREA DUE TO ITS SIZE, FEATURES AND PLAZA STYLES. THE PARK WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT TO ACCOMMODATE SKATEBOARDERS, AND THE CURRENT DESIGN OF THE PARK IS SEGREGATED AMONG ITS USERS.>>I’D ALSO LIKE TO LOOK AT CAN WE EXPAND THE SKATE PARK? CAN WE LOOK AT WHAT OUR PHASE 2 USE OF THE SKATE PARK WOULD BE? SHOULD WE LOOK AT DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT JUST TO EXPAND SO THEN WE COULD ALLOW OTHER USES IN THERE AND INSURE THAT EVERYONE IS SAFE.>>DENNIS: THE CITY COMMISSION PUT A MOTION THAT KEEPS SCOOTERS AND BMX BIKES OUT OF THE SKATE
