Assistant Recreation Officer in the US Forest Service, Shasta-Trinity NF

Music My background for working in the forest service probably starts when I was probably an infant. I show pictures of myself, sitting out in the outdoors in one of my favorite areas, in Arizona. And as I was growing up that just happened to be one of my favorite places And being out in the outdoors in that environment. We grew up going camping I went camping almost every summer, and I just loved it. Loved the outdoors. Never really knew that that’s where the career I wanted Until one day camping, I was about nineteen, twenty years old, camping with my brother and I saw some girls at the campground doing um…girl forest rangers doing the campground program. And realized then that that’s what I wanted to do and so I pursued it. I was just starting college and uh Still wasn’t quite…I wanted to just be there already you know So I was taking classes and so I went to the local ranger station there where I lived and I said hey I’m going to be a forestry student Is there something I can do? At the time they had a work-study program So I was able to just kinda get um paid through the college As sort of…to pay my way through some of my college courses. And work for the Forest Service at the same time, and it just kind of went from there I was doing recreation. I worked uh took care of campgrounds And picnic areas on that district It just sorta kept leading on to bigger and better things. I’ve been with the Forest Service about 15 years I worked for other agencies, and so my total is I’m a little over twenty The highlight of my job is Just being able to work outdoors I can’t see myself doing anything else but Being indoors in a office…stuck in a office Um…it just doesn’t appeal to me and so I just love being able to just be outdoors in nature And in sharing the things I know My experiences, with the visitors that come out to visit Um…the tips that I would offer others uh Looking for this type of work is just Pursue your dream. Go talk to um your local agency office That is close to you if you don’t have on close to you make phone calls. Get on the Internet Find out those people that you need to talk to Tell them what it is that you want to do That that’s where you want to…you want to work there And just make those calls um I just found that um it wouldn’t have happened If I hadn’t of made that initial contact. Working for the Forest Service I wouldn’t change it for the world. The people are great I work with a lot of really good people It’s fun I’ve had so many great experiences From hiking in the wilderness Flying in helicopters I’ve visited over half the United States Just by working with the Forest Service It’s a great place to work I’m Phyllis Swanson And I’m an Assistant Recreation Officer Make the Shasta-Trinity National Forest your place of employment.
